Proficiency Level Continuum
(California Department of Education, 2012, p. 6-11)
Note: The highest level—Bridging—reflects “a student’s readiness to be successful with the demands of the CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy with minimal support”. However, support needed will depend “on the familiarity and complexity of the task and topic” (California State Board of Education, 2014, p. 30).
Note: “It is critical for teachers to recognize that EL students may demonstrate varying levels of English language proficiency on different CA ELD Standards. For example, while a student may demonstrate that she or he is at the Bridging level in contributing to discussions, she or he may be at the Expanding level in explaining ideas based on close readings of text” (California State Board of Education, 2014, p. 32).
