Listening and Speaking Expectations at Five Levels

Beginning (K-2) Expectations
- Begins to speak with a few words or sentences, using some English phonemes and rudimentary English grammatical phrases.
- Answers simple questions with one - or two-word responses. -Responds to simple directions and questions using physical actions and other means of nonverbal communication. - Independently uses common social greetings and simple repetitive phrases. Early Intermediate Expectations- Begins to be understood when speaking, but may have some inconsistent use of Standard English grammatical forms and sounds .
- Asks/answers questions using phrases or simple sentences. - Retells familiar stories and short conversations by using appropriate gestures, expressions, and illustrative objects. - Orally communicates basic needs. - Recites familiar rhymes, songs, and simple stories. Intermediate Expectations- Asks/answers instructional questions using simple sentences.
- Listens attentively to stories/information and identifies key details and concepts using both verbal and nonverbal responses. - Can be understood when speaking, using consistent Standard English forms and sounds; however, some rules may not be in evidence. - Actively participates in social conversations with peers and adults on familiar topics by asking and answering questions and soliciting information. - Retells stories and talks about school-related activities using expanded vocabulary, descriptive words, and paraphrasing. Early Advanced Expectations
- Listens attentively to stories and orally identifies key details and concepts.
- Retells stories in greater detail including characters, setting, and plot. - Is understood when speaking, using consistent Standard English forms, sounds, intonation, pitch, and modulation, but may have random errors. - Actively participates and initiates more extended social conversations with peers and adults on unfamiliar topics by asking and answering questions, restating and soliciting information. - Recognizes appropriate ways of speaking that vary based on purpose, audience, and subject matter. - Asks and answers instructional questions with more extensive supporting elements. Advanced Expectations- Listens attentively to stories/information on new topics and identifies both orally and in writing key details and concepts.
- Demonstrates understanding of idiomatic expressions by responding to and using them appropriately. - Negotiates/initiates social conversations by questioning, restating, soliciting information, and paraphrasing. - Consistently uses appropriate ways of speaking and writing that vary based on purpose, audience, and subject matter. - Narrates and paraphrases events in greater detail, using more extended vocabulary. |
